Happenings at Chick Chat This and That

I think life may finally be getting a little back to normal here at the WWIN household.  After a few crazy weeks my schedule should return to normal, whatever normal may be that is.  Hopefully I’ll be able to return to my normal publishing schedule :)

For my first post this week I thought I’d share what’s been happening over at Chick Chat This and That.  We’ve simplified things a bit over there.  We were posting six days a week, three to four of those days had two posts.  Trying to keep track of our calendar was a little overwhelming given how busy all of us are right now so we decided to continue posting six days a week but keep it to one post per day.  My day is Thursday so if you are ever bored on Thursdays you can head over there and check out what I have to say!

Household Cleaning with Vinegar

Lynn is definitely the handy one of our bunch.  If something isn’t working in her house or she needs to lay some new flooring she rolls up her sleeves and get to it.  At our meeting last night we got talking about plumbing fixtures.  Somewhere along the line she started looking at Andi’s faucet and decided she wanted to show us how to remove water deposits.  Voila, her post for today was born!  Check out some of her ideas for using vinegar around her house.

I Lost It!

Road Rage Pic

Wanda loves harmony (just don’t tell her that as it makes her angry!) which is why this post made me crack up.  I do have to admit that I was a little concerned and yes, she was a little embarrassed about her behavior but I think we’ve all thought about doing this.

Pineapple Angel Food Cake

Everyone knows that Angel Food Cake is fairly low in calories.  Jenny found us this yummy, healthy alternative to other desserts.  Shorts weather is right around the corner (even in Wisconsin!), with this recipe you get to have your cake and eat it too!

Monte Cristo Sandwich

Monte Cristo Sandwiches with CCTNT

I had never heard of a Monte Cristo sandwich before Andi shared her recipe.  While I think this may be a little to much work for me (I like to eat my sandwiches on a flavored bagel) I think there are a lot of you out there that may like this.

Morning in Chicago

Chicago Skyline

This week I’m in Chicago for business.  While I hate being away the family, I love the city of Chicago!  The above picture is the view I enjoyed as I took a walk this morning after breakfast.  It was so nice to get out in the fresh air.  Of course, I did get some grief for the fact that my walk was down Michigan Ave.  It was suggested (quite accurately) that I did that so I could check out some stores.  Unfortunately Walgreens was the only store I checked out since I needed some aspirin and a sewing kit :)

While here I was able to check out the Cub/Cardinals baseball game as well as enjoy some good food.  I’ll be sharing next week a review of some of the places I ate as well as some suggestions on some inexpensive ways to see Chicago with your family.

Hope you’re all having a good week!

Weekly Menu

Fish - Done

It’s been a while since I’ve posted my weekly menu.  Reason being it seemed like even though I had great intentions to make what I put down, life got in the way and we were doing a lot of eating out.  A lot of eating out!  Since I want to be transparent on this blog and not portray myself as something I’m not, I figured it would be better to not post if my chances are follow through were pretty slim.

This coming week I’m planning on being out of town all week.  Why of all weeks did I choose this week to restart?  Believe it or not, when I travel my family tends to stick to my menu more!  Probably because I do more prep work and plan easier meals.  Plus, summer is coming up and I find it so much easier to eat at home during the summer when we can grill.  The kids can actually do the grilling and dinner can be on the table when we get home.

  • Fish fry (I’m still home this day)
  • Brats, grilled potatoes, corn
  • Hamburgers, glazed carrots, rice pilaf
  • Chicken taco buffet
  • Fend for yourself x2
  • Dinner out

Now the spring if finally upon us, I’ll be breaking out my summer menu and we should be able to eat out more.  This year, for the first time I bought a vegetable and a fruit share from a local farm co-op.  I’m excited to try out some new recipes that I’ve been finding on the internet.

Cleaning on my Vacation Day

This weekend the Chicks over at Chick Chat This and That were suppose to get away.  Unfortunately those plans fell apart a week or two ago due to our busy schedules.  I, however, decided to keep my scheduled vacation day because I really need a mental health day.

My plans were to do some baking and blogging in the morning and then run some errands while the cleaning ladies came over.  Those plans were shot when at 7am I received an email that said they wouldn’t be coming today because of a stomach virus.  The real unfortunate part about this is we have friends coming over tomorrow and Mike has a work colleague coming over on Tuesday.  No way did I want company over with furniture that hadn’t been dusted or toilets cleaned in two weeks.  Yep, that means I have to do it myself on my day off.  There go my plans.

On the bright side I’m saving a few bucks (they wanted to come next week and I told them to not worry about it).  Plus, to make lemonade out of lemons, I decided to participate in Crystal’s at Money Saving Mom’s 30 Cleaning Challenge.

One of my favorite things about reading blogs is to see all the different ways that things can be done.  Let’s face it, we’re all different people and what works for one of us doesn’t work for all of us.  Generally, the 30 day cleaning challenge doesn’t work for me.  I don’t clean every day (besides my daily pick-ups which you can read about here, here and here) plus my cleaning ladies come every other week to do the heavy stuff (toilets, floors, tubs, etc).  Since I needed to do my own cleaning this week I decided to share some of my tricks and time myself, because I work better when it’s a competition!

My first room to tackle was the living room.  Here is my before picture.  I had created a little nest for myself on the couch plus I still had yesterday’s mail on the end-table.  The first thing I did was turn on the 70′s music channel on cable since we all know that dusting the living room is better when we’re jamming to Hey Deanie.  Oh yeah – you 40+ ladies know exactly what I mean!

Living Room - B4 Cleaning

When I do have to clean, I have a go-t0 cleaning bucket that I keep in the bottom of my linen closet.  I try to always keep it stocked with items I need.  I typically have;  gloves, toilet cleaner, spray cleaners, wipes, rags, Clorox, etc.  Having all supplies together in an easy to carry bucket makes cleaning much easier.

Cleaning Bucket

I like to do my cleaning in a certain order.  I always dust first (top to bottom) and vacuum last, by doing so I’m getting rid of as much dirt and dust as I can.

  • Pick up and put away misc items
  • Dust (including lamps & pictures)  - typically I ask the cleaning ladies to lemon oil the furniture.  Today I just did a dry dusting with a rag.
  • Blinds (this is a dry dust with a rag as well)
  • Front window and glass front door
  • Sanitize door handles and remotes with Clorox wipes
  • Vacuum – today I moved the furniture since it’s been a while.  Good thing since I stumbled across an extension cord from Christmas behind the chair!

Living Room - After Cleaning

That’s it!  I also took the time to light some candles as I wanted a little ambiance while I’m doing my work.  The total time spent cleaning the living room was 16 minutes.

I’ll share my bathroom cleaning tips on Monday.  Have a good weekend!

I”ll be linking this post up over at Money Saving Mom.

Happenings Over at Chick Chat This and That

It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve shared with you what was going on over at Chick Chat This and That.  Last week I made an impromptu trip to St. Louis (I’ll be sharing some pictures with you tomorrow) and the week before I was so stressed about work I just didn’t get the post up.  Sometimes life happens and I try not to beat myself up to much over it.

With that being said, I’ll have a few more posts than usual to share with you.

No Bake Peanut Butter Torte

Mmmmm – I think Lynn knocked it out of the park with this No Bake Peanut Butter Torte.  I’m going to be bookmarking this one!

Twice Baked Potatoes

Andi shared her recipes for twice-baked potatoes.  These are always a staple at my in-laws Easter lunch.

Green Hurricanes

Even though it may not feel like it’s close here in Wisconsin, Wanda is getting ready for summer!  She shared her recipe for Green Hurricanes.  I can see serving these in a super cute hand painted pitcher with hand painted glasses – now I just need to get out and buy some :)

Is Hiring a Cleaning Service Right for You?

The number one complaint that I hear from working women is balancing home life versus work life.  About a year ago we took the plunge and hired a cleaning service.  I know the go to response is “I can’t afford that!” but in this article I share some of my thoughts about what I was willing to give up (as well as a few things I did to make room in our budget) to make it a reality as well as how I pressured Mike we decided to outsource the heavy cleaning.  It’s been amazing how much stressed I am not having to worry about scrubbing my tubs.

Banana Cream Pie

Andi shares in her post that she can’t hear Banana Cream Pie without thinking about Gilligan’s Island.  I can’t hear Banana Cream Pie without thinking about my 8th grade game day where I participated in the pie eating contest.  The pie of the day?  Banana Cream!  I haven’t had a Banana Cream Pie since then, but I still think Andi’s recipe looks quite tasty.

Outback Salmon

Salmon - Finished

As you may be aware, Outback is one of my favorite restaurants.  While I typically order their New York Strip, I’ve also been known to partake in their salmon.  It is delish!

As I look to expand my cooking repertoire, I thought I’d try to find a salmon recipe that I enjoyed and was easy to make.  Since Outback’s salmon was my all time favorite that is what I looked for.  Fortunately for me I stumbled upon the website Outback Steakhouse at Home, now that’s my kind of blog!  Here’s the recipe as posted on their site.

Smoked Salmon

Serves 6

nonstick spray
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon prepared white Horseradish
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 small garlic clove minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 tsp. coarse ground black pepper
6 (1-inch) thick salmon fillets or steaks

Coat grill with nonstick spray generously.  Whisk together oil, horseradish, soy sauce, garlic, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Brush over both sides of salmon. Grill over medium-high heat about 4 minutes each side, or until just opaque in center.Serve with dipping sauce.

Dipping Sauce:
3/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons prepared white horseradish
2 tablespoons basil
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon soy sauce

Mix all together well in a small bowl and season with salt and pepper. Better if made a day ahead and kept in fridge.

While I wouldn’t say that this was exactly like eating at Outback, it was pretty good.  I did make a few little tweaks.  First of all, I didn’t eat it with the dipping sauce.  I prefer the fish by itself.  Second, I cut significantly down on the recipe since my family ditched me and I only made one filet.  Also, my filet was quite a bit thinner than one inch so I did two minutes on the first side and about three minutes on the second side.  You definitely want to make sure you don’t overcook the fish.

Salmon Seasoning

Mix together ingredients

Salmon - Seasoned

Brush onto thawed salmon fillets

Grill over medium heat (time depends on size of filet)

Serve and enjoy!

Hunger Games – Movie Review

When The Hunger Game books came out there was a lot of buzz.  My mother-in-law and sister-in-law read the books and really enjoyed them.  I personally didn’t think the books held any appeal.  When the movie came out I had no desire to see it.

This past Saturday, while I was snoozing on the couch, Mike decided to watch it on Netflix.  I woke up as the movie was starting and decided to watch it.

The movie takes place sometime in the future, a future that looks pretty bleak.  The background is that there are twelve poor districts and a wealthy capital.  The districts had an unsuccessful uprising that resulted in their penance being the annual Hunger Games.

The first half hour or so is character and background introduction, after that the games begin.  The game consists of 24 teenagers (two from each district) who must fight to the death, the winner being the last one alive bringing “honor” to their district.  The game is televised as the ultimate reality TV show.  Similar to today’s reality shows, there is manipulation of the players by the show’s directors.  There were a few touching moments during the movie where a couple of the players chose humanity over the chance to win.

While there were components of the movie that I found interesting, overall I did not enjoy it.  The concept of humans being hunted as part of a game show is not a new concept (remember The Running Man) and the relish that some of the contestants showed while murdering others was a little disturbing.

If you are looking for a feel good movie, The Hunger Games is not what you are looking for.

What are your thoughts on the books and/or movie?

Weekly Menu

Stuffed Haddock

It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve posted a weekly menu.  I just don’t think that writing “Takeout x5″ is really a good menu to blog about.  Things have been really crazy so I haven’t been cooking which means we’ve been eating out a lot.  Plus, I was out of town last week so cooking isn’t something I was planning on doing.

This week is going to be pretty simple as Mike is out of town.  When he’s gone I try and cook the kids favorite meals.

  • Monday – I have a Chick Meeting and the kids will be eating at grandma’s house (we usually have pizza at the meeting)
  • Tuesday – Chicken & Stuffing Casserole, glazed carrots, Strawberry Salad, garlic bread
  • Wednesday – I’m going to try a new salmon recipe that I found online.  If it turns out good I’ll post the recipe
  • Thursday – Baked Haddock, rice pilaf, corn.  Danielle doesn’t like this meal so I”ll probably make her some mac and cheese
  • Friday – Dinner out to celebrate Mike’s return
  • Saturday – Dinner with friends

What’s on your plate?

Homemade Thin Mints

Thin Mint Cookies - WWIN

Is anyone out there a fan of the Girl Scout Thin Mint Cookies? I agree, they are awesome!  The unfortunate part of GS cookies is they are only available once per year.  Yes, you can buy ahead and freeze but if your family is like mine you just eat even more boxes because none of them make it to the freezer :)

For those time when GS cookies aren’t available, I have another option for you.  These are almost (though not quite) as good as the original and easy enough for the kids to help.

Simplifying Your Bill Payments

Financial Series Picture

In my quest to simplify my life I’ve identified the areas of my life that are my pain points.  Bill paying is one of those pain points.  Keeping track of paper bills, finding time to sit down and pay bills, having stamps on hand, running out of checks, forgetting to pay a bill and getting a naughty notice – all those things cause a lot of stress in my life.

Fortunately we have now entered the electronic age and bill paying has become SO much easier!  My method has changed over time but has evolved to where it’s rare for me to have to manually pay a bill.  A side benefit is that by paying bills the way we do we have easily created a budget and are more focused on where we are spending money.

If you are wanting to move to electronic banking here are some suggestions.

1.  Not all banks are created equal

We bank at a few different banks for various reasons.  Our legacy bank is a small, local bank that hasn’t had the bells and whistles like mobile banking or bill pay.  To make things simpler for me, I opened an account at a large bank that had all the bells and whistles as well as a location conveniently located to my employer.  Quite ironically, our smaller bank now has the same program as our larger bank only their charts and graphs work better.  Guess where I’m moving all our bill paying to.  When looking for a bank (or a credit union) be sure and make sure you understand the fee structure and the bill paying options.

2.  Set up a separate account for bill paying

This has probably been one of the best things we have done.  Back in the day it seems like I was always “forgetting” a payment that I had sent and would find myself overdrawn and scrambling to get money in the account.  We have one account that nothing comes out of except bills.  I calculate exactly how much is needed per paycheck to cover our bills (plus a little extra for any additional bills that may pop up) and that’s the amount that goes into that account.  We have a separate account that we use for gas, groceries and incidentals.

3.  Set up as much as you can on auto pilot

Any bill that has a fairly stable payment I put on auto pilot.  Even a few bills that may have some changes to the amount due get added to auto pay.  I figure if I overpay (I assume a few dollars higher) by a few dollars I can “true-up” at the end of the year and potentially have a December where my bills are smaller.  Doesn’t that sound like a nice Christmas present to myself?  A few bills that I put on a recurring payment are:

  • Church donations (instead of putting our donation into the collection plate I send them a check every paycheck)
  • School lunch payments
  • Insurance (car/house)
  • Cleaning services
  • Water bill
  • Mortgage
  • Cable

At any time I have the flexibility to go in and cancel or modify a payment that has been set up as recurring.

4.  Review monthly

At least once a month I log into our account and verify everything is chugging along as expected.  I also like to check the pretty graph that they kick out for me.  The graph shows where our money is going to (at least from this account) and provides a good visual as to areas that we could focus on if we were looking to cut expenses.  I also use this review time to pay any additional bills that may crop up.  I have added our doctor as a bill paying option but don’t have a recurring payment.  When I receive a bill all I need to do is type in a payment amount and pay date.  Much easier than writing a check, addressing the envelope and getting it in the mail!

What system works for you?
